Excellent concert! My 17 year old son and I shared a great experience in the pouring rain less than 15 feet from the stage, on the day before father's day. It didn't stop raining until the last song, Man on the Moon. But who cares? A little rain never hurt anyone.
It felt like Woodstock without the mud! Awesome performance by REM. Loved the set list. I got soaked to the bone and felt the spark of the lightning strike being right on the rail for Modest Mouse, but it was worth it.
Wet and scary, but a great set by REM. Exiting when Modest Mouse made the announcement they were taking a rain delay and seeing the bolt of lightning hit the peak in the bleacher area with sparks falling down was pretty intense. We thought they would cancel the show, but they went on in the pouring rain and lightning. Michael was great: awesome energy and fantastic vocals and very considerate of the audience by going right into the encore.
I saw these guys for the 1st time in '89 and they're better now than they were then.
Does anyone have a complete set list from last night's show at Jones Beach (June 14, 2008)? We left during Orange Crush and I would love to know what I missed ....
i have seen the band too many times to count and they just seem to get better with age. The lightning was scary but the rain was no big deal.As the show went on you didn't care about it anymore. Thanks to the band for not taking the customary 10 minutes between set and encore. i loved Michael's "ok, this is now the encore" remark. We all cracked up. Great show guys, see you next tour!
Awesome show. Got soaked like I just jumped in the ocean with all my clothes on. Lightning was intense. Loved the encore comment myself. Glad to see all the people stayed. My first time seeing REM and also Modest Mouse for that fact. Can't wait till next show.
Despite a wet and dreary evening, REM put on one hot and upbeat show! As usual Michael punctuated the night with political undertones that are right on the money. His references and beliefs were conveyed in a subtle matter and just added to the wonderful appeal of this timeless band. Over the years I’ve seen REM many times and Michael seems to relate and reach the audience a little more each time with his powerful messages conveyed through awesome music and lyrics. Words can not describe how amazing the concert was. When they played “Fall on Me” it just made my night! I can’t wait to catch them at the Garden on Thursday. All that is left to say is “Wow”.
Newsday's list is missing It's the End of the World as We Know It in the encore (before Fall on Me, I think). Michael said he "swore he'd never do it again, so you can believe it's completely unrehearsed."
I've seen just about every R.E.M. show in the NY area since 1989 and this was one of the best. Due to the weather, they skipped most of the slower songs that you would find in their setlist. They appeared to do a lot of adjustments to their set during the show, which added to the excitement. I was there at MSG when they retired ITEOFWAWKI and was happy to see it brought back to the setlist. That was magical. The sound was so much better for their set than Modest Mouse or the National, but they held their own during the show. The rain was cold and I was unprepared for it, but I wouldn't have missed it for anything.
Brrr... I still haven't warmed up or dried out from that cold, nasty rain on Saturday, but it was an extremely special concert. I just loved that Mike & Michael got wet too! And the band pulled off what, for me, is a minor miracle: I finally witnessed a performance of What's the Frequency, Kenneth? that made me love the song. I've seen it performed during every concert tour since the release of Monster and, up till now, I've hated the song. That no longer holds true. let me In was killer, but i was most pleased with Fall on Me
this is the 6th time i've seen REM. I want to thank them again for introducing me to a great new band by having them on the tour. I will be picking up some music by The National as soon as I can.
Out of all the shows I've seen, I can absolutely say that this is the BEST REM show i have ever seen. And they played 1,000,000. As someone who didn't get to catch them in the early club days, to hear one of my favorite songs matched up with all the new and newer material was amazing. If you weren't familiar with them and heard that song and if Michael hadn't said it was written in 1981, you wouldn't have known it didn't fit on Accelerate. Or New Adventures, Or ...you get the point. It was also great to see so many younger fans who were at their first show dancing and singing to nearly every song. that, ignoreland, Orange Crush, Welcome to the Occupation, So Central Rain, all while watching spider lightning fill the sky behind the ampitheater..... all incredible. But to me the highlight was the acoustic Let Me In. I loved loved loved the new high notes sung and I've never heard his voice better. I had chills even though i probably couldn't feel them due to the rain.....
Amazing. thanks guys. Oh--and it was funny to see everyone on the way out trying to avoid puddles in the parking lot--weren't you soaked already? haha!!!
I missed the show because my flight from Toronto was cancelled for the weather conditions in Newark...
I'm from Italy and I was in North America from job reasons, it would have been so perfect...
So, 99$ gifted to Ticketmaster and no show...
Ok, will wait for the European shows!
